Perpetual Dream Machine

Dreams have always fascinated me with the way they distort reality, shifting seamlessly between the surreal and the familiar. Perpetual Dream Machine explores the ethereal landscape of dreams, merging the evocative sounds of the orchestra with the boundless imagination of the subconscious mind.

At least for me, I often find myself thrust into the middle of a dream, I almost never know how I got there. Similarly, this work begins with an explosive gesture, hurling the listener into a swirling world of possibility. The opening unfolds with fluidity and unpredictability, mirroring a dream’s ability to shift effortlessly and inexplicably between different scenes and genres. It builds to a climactic burst of brightness before dissolving into darkness, leading to a haunting and ritualistic English horn solo. This foreboding passage embodies the dread of nightmares. It evolves into a frenzied chase that leaps through continually shifting scenes before exploding into a terrifying reimagining of Gustav Mahler’s iconic 9-note chord from his unfinished 10th Symphony.

The final section takes the music of the nightmare and sudden shifts into a positive light, embodying the epiphanies and transformative revelations often experienced in dreams. Bursts of energy alternate with moments of delicate introspection, conveyed through shimmering harmonics in the violins and vibraphone. As themes from the opening resurface, they are now fully realized and the music surges toward its electrifying conclusion. The orchestra is now fully unleashed by the infinite possibilities of the subconscious mind, a relentless and infinite Perpetual Dream Machine.
