Ascension

Ascension for Solo Clarinet and String Orchestra was composed in memory of the composer's close friend, Rex Aniciete. The two met as undergraduate students, where they performed together in the concert band. Rex's artistry, generosity, and commitment to teaching left a lasting impression. An exceptional clarinetist, he freely shared his knowledge with fellow musicians, offering guidance in lessons, rehearsals, and chamber music. His encouragement and musicianship shaped the experiences of many around him.

Although time and distance eventually separated them, they later reconnected through social media. Seeing Rex's work as an educator reaffirmed the qualities that had always defined him: kindness, humility, and a genuine desire to help others grow. News of his passing inspired the composer to write Ascension as a tribute to both his character and his artistry.

Rather than expressing grief through a somber elegy, Ascension imagines Rex as the soloist. The clarinet sings with warmth, lyricism, and quiet optimism, reflecting the compassion, generosity, and joy that characterized his life. Throughout the work, the string orchestra provides a supportive, luminous backdrop that allows the solo voice to unfold naturally, recalling both the beauty of Rex's musicianship and the lasting influence he had on those who knew him.

Ascension
is dedicated to the memory of Rex Aniciete, whose friendship, artistry, and spirit continue to resonate through this music.
