ACO's Music Factory currently serves four schools in Brookly, Bronx, Manhattan and Queens:

H.S. 470 Louis D. Brandeis High School
Principal: Eloise Messineo
Coordinator: Diane Volk
Music teachers: Barry Stern and Eva Egolf
Enrollment: 2816 students
Address: 145 West 84th Street, New York, NY 10024

Located on Manhattan's upper west side, Louis Brandeis High School was on New York State's list of the poorest performing high schools as recently as 2003. Since then a curriculum stressing arts and technology has helped Brandeis students improve markedly. Difficulties still plague Brandeis including a high drop out rate and poor attendance rates. Only one-third of the students graduate on time. The suspension rate is more than double the citywide average.

For most of the kids, every day is a struggle: only seven percent of incoming freshmen meet the state standards for math, and 16 percent for English. Many speak Spanish at home and aren't fluent in English.

The mission of the Louis D. Brandeis High School Community is to develop an environment that educates the mind and nurtures the spirit, in which each individual is provided with opportunities to define and reach his/her potential while striving for excellence and meeting high academic standards.

ACO has partnered with Brandeis since 2003, offering a rich curricula of residencies and workshops. Recently, Brandeis students had the opportunity to present music they create through Music Factory at a special proclomation presented by the New York City Council.

High School for Newcomers: Academy for New Americans
Principal: Mary Burke
Music Teacher: Jordan Sandke
Enrollment: 1093 students
Address: 28-01 41st Avenue, Long Islans City, Queens, NY 11101

Newcomers High School: Academy for New Americans is a point of entry for immigrants into the American education system. Almost half the students come from Ecuador, Colombia, or China. In total over 30 languages are spoken by students and faculty at the schools. The most traditional of the city's dozen high schools designed to serve new immigrants, Newcomer's goal is to move students quickly to regular neighborhood high schools with English-speaking students: Those who enter in ninth grade must transfer to another school for 10th grade. (Those who enroll later may stay until they graduate.)

Newcomers High School is one of 209 schools that the chancellor has exempted from the citywide uniform curriculum mandated in 2003. Students receive nine hours a week of instruction in English as a Second Language. The school also offers bilingual classes in Spanish and Chinese.

High School for Newcomers provides newly arrived immigrants with academic and social tools to meet high standards and participate in the economic and social life of our communities.

At High School for Newcomers, ACO has offered Music Factory courses as well as "Coming to America: Immigrant Sounds/Immigrant Voices," a program that brought together students, parents, and immigrant composers to talk about their lives and music.

Preston High School
Principal: Sister Lucille Coldrick
Music Teacher: Kathryn Marks
