Compose Yourself

Composition lessons for beginners and beyond...

How It Works | Register Here |The Composers

How much does it cost?

The cost for a package of 6 lessons is $725.

Where will the lessons take place?

This will depend on the instructor and on you, the student. In some cases, lessons will take place at the home of the instructor, in others they will take place at the home of the student, or, if more convenient for both of you, lessons will take place at a "neutral" location.

How long is a lesson?

The different instructors have different approaches, but in most cases a lesson will last one hour.

Can I take more than six lessons?

Of course you can! When you've completed a six lesson package, you may opt to continue your lessons by contacting Kevin James at the ACO and purchasing another six lesson package. All the same conditions apply. No need to fill out a new registration form, and no need to wait for the 4 month period to end, if you've finished before that time.

Can I study Jazz or Improvisation?

How often will there be reading sessions?

This will depend in part on how many students are signed up. Generally speaking, reading sessions will be scheduled twice per year and will be open to all students from the current year. If warranted, more will be scheduled to assure that any student who wants to participate has the opportunity to do so.

What if I have to change or cancel a lesson?

Our instructors are extremely busy professionals, so we highly encourage you to schedule all six lessons right from the start and to stick to a regular time. If a change is unavoidable, please notify your instructor as early as possible (a few days to a week is reasonable notice, one day is not) and they will do their best to reschedule. In most cases that will mean putting the lesson off a week in order maintain the same time.

How much time will I need to put in outside of lessons?

There's no simple answer to that question - but the old cliche holds true. The more time you put into your composing, the better prepared you?ll be for your lessons and the more you?ll get out of them.

Do I have to participate in extras like the ACO rehearsals to take the lessons?

No. The extra perks are just that - extras. We hope that you'll come, be a part of our community, listen, learn and enjoy. We're going to make it a memorable experience and we look forward to having you be a part of it.

What if cancellations cause me not to complete my six lessons within 4 months?

Out of respect for the composers, there will be no exceptions to this policy and no refunds for unused lessons.

What should I do if I still have questions?
