Teaching
about music by
learning to compose
Music
Factory is a hands-on, minds-on music program for diverse
high school populations. Music Factory gives high school classes
access to leading composers of our day and to live orchestral
rehearsal and performance. The program offers short- and medium-term
workshops and projects designed to mesh with high school schedules
and curricula in music. Music Factory features:

works with partner schools that demonstrate the ability to:

Factory offers
several classroom-based workshops, each featuring a leading composer-performer-teacher,
with a focused interactive curricula. Residency workshops range from
2 weeks to full semesters. Also offered are educational open rehearsals.
Programs include:

Rhythm
Factory:
a series of workshops in which students learn fundamentals of
rhythm, improvisation, and the collaborative process, by creating
their own musical composition.

Improvise!
Master composer-performers work with students on composing through
improvisational skills and techniques.

Film Music Factory:
a workshop series teaching students about music through the production of a 2-minute soundtrack from a real Hollywood movie; taught by Paul Chihara, a leading film and concert composer

Ensemble
Performances
ACO instrumentalists and guest ensembles offer exciting in-school performances.

Open
Rehearsals:
students attend dress rehearsals of American Composers Orchestra at
Carnegie Hall and other venues, observing and interacting with
conductor, musicians and composers.

Composer
Residencies:
In-school residencies ranging from one day to several weeks,
introduce students to concepts of musical composition. Students learn
from some of today's brightest musical creators.
