Greener
New York City” Commission
for Emerging Composers

and LVMH Moët Hennessy
Louis Vuitton Inc. announce “A Greener New York City”
Commission for emerging composers. The commission is
made possible through a unique partnership between the world’s leading
luxury goods group and the acclaimed new music orchestra that grows out
of a shared commitment to support emerging American artists.
One composer will be
selected through a national call for proposals, and will
be awarded a
commission of $7,000 and a future performance by American Composers
Orchestra. The winning composer will create an original composition of
approximately 7 - 9 minutes duration that will “capture and reflect the sound,
feeling and vibrancy of hundreds of neighborhoods within the five
boroughs of New York City and anticipates a brighter, more sustainable,
greener world.”
 To be considered, composers
must be American composers in the emerging stages of their careers and
meet all eligibility requirements. Each composer must submit a
completed application form, a representative orchestral score, and a
brief statement indicating how the composer intends to address the
commission theme of “a Greener New York City,” as well as additional
supplementary material.
All
submissions must be
received by January 15,
2010. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of
composer/conductor advisors, and ACO’s artistic staff in collaboration
with representatives from LVMH.

Eligibility & Guidelines
-
Only composers who are either a U.S. citizen, or a non-citizen lawfully
and permanently residing or studying full-time in the United States,
may apply.
- There are no age restrictions;
however, applicants
should be
composers at the early stages of their professional careers.
- Each composer may submit only
one representative
orchestral
composition for consideration.
- The composition submitted must
have
been completed after December 31, 2004.
- A sound recording of the work
submitted is NOT
required. However, a
sound recording or MIDI realization may be submitted if available.
- The quality of the score
submitted is the primary
evaluation
criteria. It is therefore in the applicant’s best interest that the
score be clear, accurate, and the best representation of the composer’s
work. The additional background information is for eligibility and
documentation purposes.
- Composers who have previously
submitted works for
consideration in
another of ACO’s programs or for an EarShot new music reading, are
eligible to apply for this program, however a separate submission form
and complete set of materials is required.
- Incomplete, illegible, or late
applications will not
be considered.
- There is no fee to apply.
- One composer will be awarded a
$7,000 commission to
create a 7 - 9
minute original work that “captures and reflects the sound, feeling and
vibrancy of hundreds of neighborhoods within the five boroughs of New
York City and anticipates a brighter, more sustainable, greener world.”
- The commissioned work will be
performed by ACO’s
Orchestra
Underground ensemble, and may be scored for: winds at 1.1.1.1; brass at
1.1.1.1; timpani, 2 percussion, harp, keyboard, and strings
(6.5.4.3.2). Standard orchestral doublings are permitted. The work may
also employ electronics, MIDI, digital technology, and/or sound
reinforcement in combination with the above instrumental forces.
- The commissioned composer will
be responsible for
providing
professional, legible orchestral parts and scores prepared according to
guidelines established by the Major Orchestral Librarians Association
(MOLA). MOLA guidelines are available here.
How to Apply
Before submitting an
application, carefully review the eligibility & submission
guidelines above. Submission deadline is January 15, 2010,
5PM (EST).
A complete
submission must include the following:
- A brief narrative statement
(not to exceed one page, 12 pt. type)
describing the proposed commissioned work, and indicating how the
composer intends
to address the commission theme of “A Greener New York City.”
- One bound copy of a score that
best represents the composer’s
orchestral work, clearly labeled with the composer’s name and title on
the cover page.
- A sound recording or MIDI
realization in audio CD format is optional
and may accompany the score.
- A complete submission form.
- A current résumé for the
composer including education, major
teachers, awards, professional affiliations.
- A list of works, including
title, year composed, instrumentation,
duration, and performance history.
- One letter of recommendation
from an established composer or other
music professional, attesting to the applicant’s accomplishments and
potential as an orchestral composer. (May be sent under separate
cover.)
- A self-addressed, stamped
envelope suitable for the return of
materials. All supporting materials remain the property of ACO. ACO is
not responsible for lost scores.
